Artist Statement

Creating is a necessity for me, not a choice. I have been fascinated by art all my life. It was one of the few means of self-expression that I was allowed to explore during my childhood.

When I make a quilt, the entire experience is between the quilt and me. I don’t think about whether others will enjoy it or if it will sell. I work very intuitively choosing fabrics and colours. When I quilt, I go to a quiet place inside of myself. By working almost entirely by hand, I feel a direct connection with my quilts. My work is very spiritual and personal. I try to express the connection I feel between a higher spirit and myself. This communion occurs most often when I am outdoors so my quilts are usually about landscape and nature.

Making a quilt is an adventure in self-growth. I love the process of discovery, the fun of solving problems that present themselves and finding just the right fabric for that particular piece. When I am finished a quilt, I can let go of it quite easily. Though I do have my favourite quilts, I love the process of creating much more than the end product. I want to dive into another adventure right away! Creating a quilt is a solitary experience. This solitude is balanced when I get a chance to share my work with others.

Like myself, my work is always evolving and developing. In the future, I would like to work towards even deeper layers of meaning. I want to convey to others the beauty of our environment and the joy of feeding the spiritual side of their lives, no matter how they achieve it. I can’t foresee a time when I will tire of working with fabric. Having enough time to create all the images that are in my mind now will be a challenge!

"What lies before us are small matters compared to what lies within us. And when we bring what is within out into the world, miracles happen."
-Henry David Thoreau
